OAKLAND, CA — California Environmental Voters (EnviroVoters) released the following statement in response to today’s release of Premiums on Fire – a report from the Center for Climate Integrity. The report found the average policyholder with State Farm, California’s largest insurer, will pay $841 or 45% more for homeowners insurance in 2025 compared to 2023 if the provisionally-approved 21.8% rate increase is finalized to help pay claims in the aftermath of the Los Angeles fires. EnviroVoters, the Center for Climate Integrity, and Extreme Weather Survivors are cosponsors of Senate Bill 222, authored by Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco).
“California’s skyrocketing insurance rate hikes won’t stop until Big Oil faces justice for its greed and lies that caused the climate crisis. The biggest oil companies in the world knew the climate dangers of burning fossil fuels in the 1950s but they ruthlessly pioneered climate denial and chose to put us at risk to protect trillions of dollars in profits. Struggling with exploding climate disaster recovery costs, many insurers have left California and millions of us have lost home insurance and faced steep rate hikes to keep the insurance we have, all while Big Oil rakes in record profits each year,” said Mary Creasman, Chief Executive Officer, EnviroVoters. “The only way the climate affordability crisis ends is when Big Oil’s victims can pursue justice in court. It’s time for Big Oil to pay its fair share of recovery costs for the disasters it has caused. This is why lawmakers must pass SB 222, the Affordable Insurance and Climate Recovery Act.”
