SACRAMENTO, CA — Today, California Environmental Voters (EnviroVoters) released the following statement in response to the Senate Appropriations Committee killing SB 559 and SB 709.

Statement from Melissa Romero, Deputy Legislative Director, California Environmental Voters:

“It’s disappointing that the Senate killed two climate bills to establish transparency standards for California’s Low Carbon Fuel Standard (LCFS) and to end three offshore oil drilling leases in Southern California. This setback raises concerns about the commitment to environmental sustainability and the well-being of our communities.

The persistence of sacrificing the health and overall success of our most vulnerable communities to sustain an industry that raked in a staggering $4 trillion in global profits last year is troubling. This underscores the urgent need for a reevaluation of priorities and a shift towards cleaner, more sustainable policies.

In the face of these disappointments, we call on the Legislature to give precedence to decisive climate action this year by moving climate bills forward. It is imperative that we prioritize the health of our planet and the welfare of our communities over short-term gains, ensuring a sustainable and resilient future for generations to come.”

ABOUT CALIFORNIA ENVIRONMENTAL VOTERS

California Environmental Voters (formerly the California League of Conservation Voters) believes the climate crisis is here and this moment requires transformative change. California has the policy solutions to stop climate change but lacks the political will to do it at the rate and scale that’s necessary. EnviroVoters exists to build the political power to solve the climate crisis, advance justice, and create a roadmap for global action. We organize voters, elect and train candidates, and hold lawmakers accountable for bold policy change. We won’t stop until we have resilient, healthy, thriving communities, and a democracy and economy that is just and sustainable for all.
